Plum EMS
Mission Statement
“To provide emergency medical
services and related emergency and medical services for the benefit of all
individuals in Plum Borough, Allegheny County and in neighboring communities
and counties, on the highway
thereto, and support of state and federal Homeland Security
endeavors”.
Plum Emergency
Medical Service was incorporated as a non-profit (501-(c) 3 corporation in
January of 1991. Plum EMS began operations on March 17, 1991 serving the
Borough of Plum, with a population 30,000 and coverage area of 28 square
miles. Located in the eastern
suburbs of Allegheny County, Plum EMS offers mutual aid to bordering EMS
agencies of Penn Hills, Lower Valley , Monroeville EMS, and Westmoreland
county EMS services, Murrysville Medic One, and New Kensington
Ems.
The service began operations with a staff of 6 full time
paid personnel, 3 paramedics and
3 emergency medical technicians. The support of Plum Borough council was a
driving force in the development of Plum Ems initially by giving financial
support for start up, and committing the borough to recognize Plum EMS as
the provider of emergency services to the community.
Over the years Plum EMS received additional aid from the
borough by renovating a public works building and converting it into a new
base station for Plum EMS. This building enables us to house three ALS
units as well quarters and office for personnel.
Currently Plum EMS operates 2 ALS ambulances 16 hours
daily, with one ALS unit overnight.
Staffing consists of five full time paramedics, and five EMTs, as
well as 14 part time personnel.
Plum EMS provides wheelchair transportation to doctor offices , and non
emergent medical services for residents of the community.
Squad 485 is a support vehicle for operations, supervision and
response to special events.
Plum EMS has long been committed to supporting the
community with various services and programs. Public awareness meetings with
senior citizens, PTA groups, Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs promote the
need for community support for emergency services.
Plum EMS is a con-ed site through the Pennsylvania Department
of Health. CPR and first aid classes are offered on a regular basis
to residents and businesses, taught by Plum EMS certified instructors.
We provide medical coverage for the Plum School
Districts football programs annually.
Biannually the “Prom Promise” mock car crash is presented to the high
school junior and senior high class to promote the awareness of drinking and
driving, as well as making sound choices in their future.
Community events such as 5k and 10K races, as well as other
special events are provided medical support yearly by Plum EMS
personnel.
Plum EMS has had the opportunity to provide medical
coverage to Oakmont County Club over the last 19 years for major golfing
events such as the USGA Men’s Open, USGA Men’s Amateur Open, and the Womens
Open USGA Tournament. These events utilized the resources of numerous
agencies within the EMS service community.
Additional support from health systems, such as UPMC and West Penn
Allegheny, Allegheny County, Pittsburgh EMS, and numerous affiliated EMS
systems coming together to provide medical coverage to thousands of people
in these week long events.
Plum EMS Board of Directors and the Operations
administrators are a dedicated group of people who bring their expertise to
the service providing the financial and sound business decisions to guide
Plum EMS into the future. Their goal is to insure the continued growth of
the service and working toward “in partnership with the Community”.
